Moon-2.jpg

Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has partnered with French space agency CNES for the Emirates Lunar Mission.

Under the new French-Emirati cooperation initiative, CNES will provide MBRSC with two optical cameras (CASPEX) for the Rashid rover, which will provide high-resolution images in full HD.

The CASPEX camera on top of the rover’s mast will provide panoramic visibility of the rover surroundings while the rear-mounted CASPEX camera will deliver images of the lunar soil with high spatial resolution. The latter’s images of the drive tracks will be analysed to determine wheel sinkage and to investigate the detailed wheel-soil interaction. Such data will be important to design the mobility systems of future rovers.

Commenting on the collaboration, Yousuf Hamad AlShaibani, Director-General, MBRSC, said: “The UAE aims to lead an innovative and sustainable exploration of the Moon through the Emirates Lunar Mission. Our partnership with CNES is a continuation of the already great collaborative effort with France and we will continue to strengthen it further. We believe that collaboration is the way forward for space exploration, and the more we work together to tackle challenges for the good of humanity, the greater our collective prospects for the future.”

Philippe Baptiste, Chairman and CEO, CNES, added: “I am glad to add today a new milestone and a new destination to the longstanding partnership between France and the UAE. With MBRSC we have developed fruitful and mutually beneficial cooperation. It will allow us not only to take French technology to the Moon and bring back data for our scientists but most and foremost to strengthen the relations between our respective technology and scientific ecosystems.”

The Emirates Lunar Mission is one of the initiatives under the Mars 2117 Programme, which aims to build a human colony on Mars, and is funded by the ICT Fund under the Telecommunications And Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA).

workshop-1.jpg

Dubai-based distributor Advanced Media will host two filmmaking workshops by Juan David Salazar at the end of this month.

Juan David is a French-Colombia director and producer based in Prague. He is also the CEO and founder of Pantheon Pictures.

David has won the first prize at the Action/Cut Film Fest 2013 in Los Angeles, his films were officially selected at the SFC at the Cannes Film Festival, Brest International Film Festival, TISFF, and London Independent Film Festival.

The workshop will guide attendees on how to execute a commercial from start to finish. It will cover everything from the first approach to the client, making a storyboard, casting and much more, followed by the creative execution and the technical approach in order to successfully deliver work to the client. The workshop will help to build the confidence filmmakers need to approach future clients and deliver great contents.

After the deep impact of a global pandemic, budgets for content creation have been cut more than half. Crews have been reduced to minimal and now more than ever clients are turning to a one-man crew setup. The workshop will show everything a filmmaker, videographer or director need to know in order to successfully deliver projects on its own.

Advanced Media will conduct the workshop on June 29 and 30 at 3 PM.

It will be an in-person workshop at the Advanced Media Training Room, registration for which can be done online.

ericson-2.jpg

UAE-based telecom group Etisalat has joined forces with Ericsson to deploy 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) across its commercial network. The 5G high-band commercial deployment will help achieve high performance 5G downlink data speeds of 4.2Gbps and latency of 8 milliseconds (ms).

Etisalat has built a 5G network infrastructure that can provide improved performance, including ultra-high speeds and ultra-low latency to enable the digital transformation in the country and the wide implementation of use cases related to industry 4.0, automation and Internet of Things (IoT).

The UAE leadership is a driving force in accelerating the digital vision along with the telecom regulatory authority TDRA (Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority) becoming one of the first to allocate mmWave spectrum to be used for 5G technology deployment across the country.

5G mmWave delivers high spectrum and capacity, making it suitable for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to deliver fast, fibre-like internet speeds wirelessly over the last mile, and for crowded hotspots such as stadiums, malls and large indoor events that require high peak rates. It also includes wide spectrum segments available for 5G along with lower latencies.

Speaking about the partnership, Haitham AbdulRazzak, Chief Technology Officer, Etisalat, said: “Etisalat has always been at the forefront of the telecom industry, and we continuously work to provide our customers with the best possible digital experience. This deployment is in line with our overall vision to ‘Drive the digital future to empower societies’ empowering our customer with the experience of ultrahigh quality 5G connectivity. Moving ahead we look forward to expanding this technology further on demand for all customer segments.”

Saeed Alzarouni, Senior Vice President Mobile Network, Etisalat, added: “We are proud to have introduced 5G mmWave as part of the UAE’s digital infrastructure. Etisalat is always working towards providing the best and ensuring the latest technology is available to all our customers. The partnership with Ericsson is a key milestone in our 5G journey that will support the automation and massive bandwidth demands of futuristic technologies and advanced use cases.”

Ekow Nelson, Vice President and Head of Global Customer Unit Etisalat at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, stated: “We look forward to supporting Etisalat in harnessing the opportunities that new technologies like 5G can present for the people of the UAE. In combination with established solutions, such as Fixed Wireless Access, largely untapped mmWave frequencies can help meet the increased demands for high-quality connectivity while facilitating exciting use cases from advanced video streaming and online gaming with augmented and virtual reality experiences to industrial IoT and smart factories.”

The 5G standardisation focuses on certain requirements to provide connectivity for superior services, such as enhanced mobile broadband to smartphones and other mobile devices for video streaming and real-time online gaming, as these have extreme requirements on availability, latency, and reliability.

In response, 5G radio frequency ranges were widened to meet the need for enhanced mobile broadband and performance. The 5G radio frequencies now include all those previously held by 4G, as well as more frequencies up to 6GHz (Sub-6) and the high-band (mmWave) spectrum beyond 24GHz.

Ahmed-El-Saka-1.jpg

Egyptian actor Ahmed El Saka will receive the 2021 Career Achievement Award at fifth edition of the El Gouna Film Festival (GFF).

El Saka is honoured for his extraordinary cinematic journey and outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry over the past two decades.

Speaking about the award, El Saka said: “It is a great honour to be recognised with El Gouna Film Festival’s Career Achievement Award this year. As I look back at my journey, I remember all the masters of the craft who influenced my career and inspired me. I am so grateful to them, along with my family and dear audience for all the love and support they have given me over the years. I owe this milestone to all those amazing individuals who stood by my side every step of the way.”

Bushra Rozza, Co-founder and COO of El Gouna, added: “I am deeply delighted that my dear colleague, Ahmed El Saka, is the recipient of GFF’s Career Achievement Award this year. In my early years as an actress, I have heard stories about his huge support for the cinematic industry. He never cared how big his paycheck was as a box office star, on the contrary, he often devoted a cut of his wage to the production of his projects to ensure the best quality was achieved. El Saka is not only a superstar but also a starmaker. He has always supported young and emerging talents, who usually find their breakthrough in his films and continue their careers as celebrities. A rare trait fit for a true star.”

The son of Salah El Saka, the pioneer of Egypt’s puppet theatre, El Saka graduated from the Higher Institute of Theatre. He started his career with minor roles before his breakthrough in the TV series Who Doesn’t Love Fatma? based on Anis Mansour’s novel; and Rabie’s Other Half, starring Yehia El Fakharany and Elham Shahine. In cinema, he rose to fame by acting alongside Mohamed Henedy in A Saidi in the AUC—a movie that broke the rules by introducing what has been labelled ‘youth cinema’ to the Egyptian audience through a group of young actors, who are now the biggest celebrities on the artistic scene. It became the highest-grossing movie in the history of Egyptian cinema back then and still tops the charts as the highest-earning film in Egypt, to date.

El Saka is considered a trailblazer of modern action cinema in the Middle East, mostly famous for doing dangerous action sequences and performing risky stunts without a double. His repertoire includes over 11 blockbuster films, among which are Amr Arafa’s Africano, Tarek Al Arian’s Tito, Marwan Hamed’s Ibrahim El Abyad, Sandra Nashaat’s El Maslaha, as well as Sherif Arafa’s Mafia and The Island film series. His filmography isn’t short of successful romance films like Saeed Hamed’s Shorts, T-Shirt and a Cap, Kamla Abu Zikri’s About Love and Passionand Khaled Marei’s Taimour and Shafika or comedies like Saeed Hamed’s Hamam in Amsterdam, Amr Arafa’s The Council’s Son and Ali Idris’ Father.

Orascom Development Holding chairman Samih Sawiris, stated: “I was very thrilled to learn that the festival’s International Advisory Board decided to honour Ahmed El Saka this year. Ahmed’s career reflects one of the most inspiring success stories of a young man who believed that he could turn his dream into reality, have an impact, and make a difference. Surely and steadily, he rose to the forefront of the Egyptian cinematic scene.”

Naguib Sawiris, Festival Founder, remarked: “The festival’s Career Achievement Award is dedicated to artists who devoted their journeys to the entertainment industry. Ahmed El Saka is no exception. His status as one of the leading stars of his generation is a result of his continuous dedication and commitment to his work and audience.”

A yearly GFF tradition, the festival’s Career Achievement Award is reserved for influential talents across different generations whose work and commitment to the film and entertainment industry have left an indelible mark. Recent recipients include Egyptian stars Adel Emam, Mohamed Henedy and Khaled El Sawy; international stars Forest Whitaker, Sylvester Stallone, Gérard Depardieu and Saïd Taghmaoui; Egyptian director Daoud Abdelsayed, Egyptian art director Onsi Abou Seif, Tunisian filmmaker Dora Bouchoucha, and Palestinian filmmaker Mai Masri.

The fifth edition of GFF is set to take place from October 14 to 22, 2021 in the resort town of El Gouna.
