SICRAL-3-2.jpg

Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio have signed a contract with the Italian Ministry of Defence, represented by TELEDIFE / Secretariat General of Defence, for the development of the SICRAL 3 secure satellite communications system, including its ground segment. Covering the development of phases B and C, the contract is worth a total of approximately €159m, as a result of an articulated and complete negotiation process.

The SICRAL (Italian System for Secure Communications and Alerts) programme deploys geostationary satellites for confidential strategic and tactical communications, to support defence missions both in Italy and abroad. It will ensure continuity with the current SHF and UHF-band telecom services provided by the SICRAL 1A, 1B and SICRAL 2 satellites, while expanding its suite of services by providing a Ka-band payload, as well as supporting security, public rescue and civil protection services.

SICRAL 3 will also capitalise on the ongoing developments within the ItalGovSatCom (I-GSC) programme, a pillar of the evolving “Space Economy” and the Programmes of Military Research, and will help expand NATO’s current satellite capabilities.

To develop the SICRAL 3 programme, Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio, via their Space Alliance, have created a temporary consortium led by Thales Alenia Space, with Telespazio also playing a major role.

Thales Alenia Space will be responsible for the entire SICRAL 3 telecommunications system, the space segment (including system design and integration), and the design, production and integration of the innovative UHF, SHF and Ka-band payloads. The space segment includes two geostationary satellites, SICRAL 3A and SICRAL 3B. The platform, which features electric propulsion, is based on a modular and autonomous orbital transfer design using GNSS/GPS sensors and receivers for satellite positioning and attitude. Leonardo will supply the star sensors that enable SICRAL 3 to maintain the correct attitude in orbit through sophisticated algorithms.

Telespazio will manage the development of the ground segment, drawing on synergies with previous SICRAL developments for the Vigna di Valle Control Center and the Fucino Space Center. The company will be in charge of the satellites’ launch and early orbit phase (LEOP) and in-orbit tests (IOT).

Massimo Claudio Comparini, Deputy CEO and SEVP Exploration, Observation and Navigation at Thales Alenia Space, said: “The SICRAL 3 contract marks a major step forward for Thales Alenia Space and the entire space industry in terms of our ability to propose design solutions and technologies, not only for the Italian government but also for allied nations and international organisations such as NATO. This contract reflects the fruitful long-standing collaboration between our company and the Defense Administration. Thanks to the experience gained in conducting national programmes such as SICRAL and COSMO-SkyMed, as well as expertise in both ground and space systems, the Italian space industry retains full autonomous capacity in the development and delivery of end-to-end solutions for large-scale integrated systems.”

Luigi Pasquali, Telespazio’s CEO, added: “SICRAL missions have represented excellence in the implementation and management of complex space programs for over 20 years. The Space Alliance between Leonardo and Thales, through its companies Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space, works closely with the Italian Ministry of Defense to provide modern and effective satellite communications services for our country and NATO. By ensuring the continuity of the SICRAL programme and expanding its services, especially through an added Ka-band, our defence forces will have the operational capacity needed to further strengthen the country’s international role.”

Giuseppe Abbamonte, Admiral Chief Inspector of TELEDIFE (IT, Telematics and Advanced Technologies Directorate of the Ministry of Defence), stated: “Within the past three and a half years, as a Director of TELEDIFE, we have launched major space programs. Today, these efforts have culminated in the signature of the contract for the development of the future military satcom satellite constellation. Today’s signature once again proves not only the enormous importance of space for defence, but also the very high level achieved by Italian industry, represented today by two of the most important companies operating in this sector, Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio. Italian industry not only produces systems capable of meeting the complex requirements imposed by national military needs, but is also asserting itself in a highly competitive international context.”

Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio have already supplied to the Italian Ministry of Defense two first-generation SICRAL satellites (no longer in operation), and the second-generation SICRAL 2 satellite. Telespazio, having co-financed the SICRAL 1B and SICRAL 2 missions, has consolidated its role as a defence satellite operator.

Saudi-Arabia-Cinema-1.jpg

Cinema box office revenues in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are expected to grow by 4% to $1bn (Dh3.7bn) by 2024, compared to a 2.4% decline worldwide, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a global auditing consultancy.

Research data analysed by finance website Finaria also showed that globally the combined revenues in the box office industry plummeted by 71.5% from $42.5bn in 2019 to approximately $31bn last year.

This reflects a shift in the global cinema industry landscape where growth has traditionally been driven by the countries outside of the MENA region. However, expansion throughout the Arab world and the Middle East, specifically in Saudi Arabia, has unlocked an economic opportunity and Saudi Arabia has now become a major contributor to the growth of the global cinema industry.
Cinemas in many markets are still closed and few countries have opened cinema halls while many have permanently closed as a result of being significantly financially impacted by Covid-19. However, unlike many other markets, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) box office was up 3% to $115m in 2020.

By 2030, one of the governing authorities to regulate and operate cinemas, the General Commission for Audiovisual Media (GCAM), expects there to be around 350 cinemas and 2,500 movie screens in the country, and the industry will be worth around $1bn.

The organisers of GM Events has released the dates for the fourth edition of the Meta Cinema Forum – the largest cinema convention in the Middle East and Africa – from October 26-28, 2021 at Atlantis the Palm, Dubai.

Meta Cinema Forum, which takes place amid the World Expo 2020, will host a conference, awards, seminars, workshops, masterclasses, special screenings, premieres, product presentations, slates, exhibitions and live demonstrations. The conference will tackle industry issues as well as regional industry-specific discussions on the film industry across Africa, Asia, South Asia and the Middle East.

Speaking about the event, Leila Masinaei, Managing Partner, Great Mind Events Management, said: “Back for its fourth edition, the Meta Cinema Forum, now expanding to cover markets across including Levant, Turkey and Indian subcontinent, is sure to be the hottest cinema event in the year 2021. The event is unique in that it highlights the only region with an expanding cinema sector, with participants actively attending to source new design ideas, F&B concepts, technological innovation and alternative content.”

Ignace Lahoud, Chief Executive Officer of Majid Al Futtaim Cinemas and Majid Al Futtaim Leisure & Entertainment added: “VOX Cinemas is proud to be the strategic partner of the Meta Cinema Forum once again, given our shared commitment to the cinematic experience. Now in its fourth year, The Meta Cinema Forum provides an important platform and inspires dialogues amongst leading players so that we can continuously innovate and enhance the cinema experience and industry. With the Meta region becoming an increasingly important market to the global box office, events such as this are essential to the continued success of the industry and, we look forward to this year’s event which boasts a stellar line-up.”

Meta Cinema Forum will focus on the challenges faced by the cinema industry, changing trends as well as focusing on the new cinema projects that will drive the growth of the industry.

The continued participation and support of the African continent, backed by the Pan-African Film Consortium, will bring the leading African film industry movers and shakers into the conversation.

Mykel Parish Ajaere, President, Pan-African Film Consortium, said: “In 2020, the coronavirus heralded a new economy for the creative industry with the global film industry alone suffering a revenue loss of over ten billion US dollars due to the impact of the virus outbreak around the world. There must be a way to balance commercial returns and I believe that the Meta Cinema Forum will provide sustainable solutions to the Middle East and African cinema, at this difficult time. As president of the Pan-African Film Consortium and as an influencer in the African film industry, I’m excited about our partnership with the Meta Cinema Forum. This is the time for Africa to strengthen its film economy and harness the enormous benefits the forum will provide.”

AS-1.jpg

Amazon Studios has released an inclusion policy that extends its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity for its content and productions, as well as a Playbook with guidelines for its collaborators in the creative community. These guides offer detailed and actionable recommendations as Amazon Studios continues to seek out stories and storytelling that amplify voices across race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability (including mental health), body size, gender, gender identity, and gender expression for the global Prime Video audience.

Latasha Gillespie, Executive Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Amazon Studios, said: “Amazon Studios has long prioritized telling innovative and inclusive stories from a diverse range of creative talent, delighting our global audiences. We wanted to move beyond good intentions to creating mechanisms that hold us accountable to a high bar. This Inclusion Policy and Inclusion Playbook adds important, additional depth and guidance for our internal teams and external partners to ensure we continue to advance our shared mission of amplifying the best creatives and content around the world.”

Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, added: “With the establishment of our Inclusion Policy and Inclusion Playbook, Amazon Studios has committed itself to being a thought and action leader in the transformation of our industry. We know how much work there is to be done to improve representation both on-camera and behind the scenes, and it starts at home, with us. With clear directives and a commitment to accountability, these guides provide a path toward a more equitable future, both on- and off-camera.”

Amazon Studios shared the Policy and Playbook with creators, including Gloria Calderón Kellett, creator and executive producer of the upcoming Amazon Original series With Love. Kellett stated: “I am so proud to be a part of a creative community at Amazon that understands the importance of what I’ve been doing my whole career. Inclusive hiring is what makes a change. Opportunity and an eye towards changing things through action is what makes a change. Thrilled that Amazon has put together this playbook to start important conversations with their other creatives. This is real action and commitment and I’m thrilled to see it!”

Greg Daniels, Creator and Executive Producer of Upload, commented: “Having worked with Amazon Studios for several years, I can confirm their commitment to inclusiveness is deep, sincere, sensitive and practical. These new guidelines should encourage talented people from historically underrepresented groups to feel more confident about making a career in Hollywood.”

Establishing expectations for Amazon Studios and its creative partners, the Inclusion Policy covers four primary areas: Developing Stories and Characters, Hiring and Production, Reporting and Documentation, and Meeting Goals. The policy ensures meaningful visibility in Amazon Studios’ content and throughout all aspects of the production process — both in the stories being told and the people hired to tell them.

The policy includes specific goals for Amazon Studios productions, including; Each film or series with a creative team of three or more people in above-the-line roles (Directors, Writers, Producers) should ideally include a minimum 30% women and 30% members of an underrepresented racial/ethnic group. This aspirational goal will increase to 50% by 2024, casting actors whose identity (gender, gender identity, nationality, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability) aligns with the character they will be playing, Pay equity across casting, behind the camera staff and crew, and for vendors and suppliers, and seeking at least three bids from vendors or suppliers on productions, one of which must be from a woman-owned business and one from a minority-owned business.

It will aim to include one character from each of the following categories in speaking roles, with a minimum 50% of these to be women: LGBTQIA+, person with a disability, and three regionally underrepresented race/ethnic/cultural groups.

Amazon Studios will provide a report template for each production to indicate whether these expectations were met, that will be submitted within one month of the completion of principal photography. This reporting exceeds the minimum standards set by the Academy, but ensures Amazon is poised to report on the diversity of their films for Academy Award contention.

Amazon Studios worked closely with Dr Stacy Smith and Dr Katherine Pieper of USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and with Brenda Robinson of the International Documentary Association and Gamechanger Films on the creation of the Policy and Playbook.

Dr Stacy Smith said: “Frankly, the outcomes of DEI work within the entertainment industry have not been swift or sweeping. In part, that can be attributed to disingenuous approaches to address the systemic barriers to entry that have long plagued Hollywood. But now, Amazon Studios has created a comprehensive new blueprint that will change Hollywood by elevating those who have historically lacked access. I’m immensely proud of this new policy and I know it will be a gamechanger throughout an industry often resistant to real change.”

Jamie-S-Rich-1.jpg

Tapas Media, a digital publisher of webcomics and novels, has appointed former DC group editor Jamie S Rich as Editor-in-Chief.

Rich comes to the digital publisher after spending time at DC Comics, which he joined in 2015 as part of its Vertigo imprint, where he edited Sheriff of Babylon by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, as well as that duo’s Eisner-winning Mister Miracle series.

Speaking about the appointment, Michele Wells, CCO of Tapas Media, said: “We are thrilled to have Jamie join us as editor-in-chief. As both a creator and an editor, he has an innate understanding of the storytelling power of comics, and its ability to transcend the medium to both entertain and empower. With this deep knowledge and experience, Jamie is uniquely positioned to help us expand our global reach by guiding the next generation of creators in finding just the right story to tell at just the right time.”

Rich added: “Growing up reading indie and self-published comics in the 1980s, I saw whole new worlds, and I started telling my stories, too. These days the realm may be digital, but it’s still comics. It’s still words and pictures, the basic components of modern storytelling. So, the great thing about Tapas is that it provides a platform for new voices, a place for the storytellers coming up now to share their voices. Anything is possible in a comic book.”

Rich came up in the industry at Dark Horse comics, joining the indie publisher in 1994 and moving to Oni Press in 1998, where he served as editor-in-chief.
